The Linden's Story
Nearly three quarters of a century ago, Alois Linden learned the art of baking as an apprentice to a master European baker in Germany. It was there that Alois began creating festive cakes and cookies of the highest quality. In 1928, Alois sold his popular Patisserie in Wiesbaden, Germany and brought his Old World recipes to the United States. Alois and his brother Paul opened a pastry shop in Scarsdale, New York on Garth Road in 1934. It was there that they created the famous Linden Chocolate Chip and Linden Butter Crunch Cookie. One day, Paul Linden decided to put three cookies in a bag and sell them to the local delis. This new concept of cookies in a bag became so successful, that they needed a new facility and wrapping machinery to keep up with demand. A friend named Richard Hellmann, (Hellmann Mayonnaise founder) offered to help financially and together they moved the business from Scarsdale to White Plains, New York. Linden’s became the first company to put chocolate chip cookies in a bag in the New York Area. They bake these delicious morsels the old fashioned way using lots of chocolate, butter crunch candy, fresh whole eggs, sugar, and vanilla extract.
Today, Linden’s continues to produce its Real Stollen on a Limited basis during the Holiday Season with the handcrafted care that Alois and Paul insisted upon. Our recipe includes all natural ingredients; plump raisins, candied fruits and peels, creamy butter, fresh whole eggs and our own special filling. Linden’s handcrafted Stollen is a tasty treat or gift for the holiday season.
In 1960, Charles F. Sturz bought the company and it is currently run by the Sturz family today with same care and devotion to quality exampled by the Linden brothers.
